A Kitchen for the Rainbow School
At the end of June, construction work began on the new kitchen for the Rainbow School.
Currently, 78 children attend the Rainbow School. Some of them are cared for in the kindergarten, while the others attend Grades 1 and 2. Their school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m.
Many of the children arrive at school in the morning without having had breakfast and do not bring any food for the rest of the day either. That is why we decided to build a dedicated kitchen for the Rainbow School. In the future, the children will be provided with a warm and nutritious meal during their school day. A cook will prepare fresh meals for them every day.
The children are cared for and taught by a total of five kindergarten teachers and school teachers. Colours for Kids covers all salary costs, providing them with secure and fairly paid employment.
The kitchen building has now been completed. All that is missing is the kitchen equipment before the new kitchen can begin operating. We will keep you updated on the next steps.
Working Together for a More Beautiful Rainbow School
In addition to building the new kitchen, further renovation and improvement work was carried out on the Rainbow School grounds. Mothers and teachers worked together and actively helped with the improvements.
The buildings received fresh coats of paint, the verandas were decorated with colourful wooden boards, and a new, colourful climbing frame was built for the children.
Step by step, the Rainbow School has become not only more functional, but also more colourful and welcoming – a place where children can feel at home, play and learn.
Creating Jobs – Creating Opportunities
With this project, we not only want to improve the children’s daily care and nutrition, but also create new opportunities for people in the local community.
Unemployment in South Africa remains very high. According to Statistics South Africa, the official unemployment rate stood at 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026.
Especially in rural areas, many people have limited access to education and vocational training. As a result, opportunities to learn a profession and find long-term employment are often limited.
We are therefore all the more grateful that, thanks to the donations we receive, we are able to provide six people with permanent jobs: five kindergarten and school teachers, as well as a cook for the new school kitchen.
In this way, we are achieving several important goals at once: the children receive care and education and, in the future, a warm meal during their school day. At the same time, secure jobs are being created locally, providing new opportunities for employees and their families.
Every donation helps us give children a better future, create jobs and provide long-term support for people in the local community.
