Due to the nationwide lockdown since the end of March, many South Africans are currently facing existential hardship. The extreme poverty of more than half of the population has increased further as a result of the government’s measures. Many people have lost their jobs, especially those who were doing day jobs. Families fear for their existence and have neither food nor hygiene products for their daily lives. The need is particularly great in the poorer rural regions and in the townships. State aid, basic security, etc. as in Germany does not excist in South Africa. Many are forced to beg for help on the street and ask for donations.
After Karin van Rooyen (representative of Colours for Kids in South Africa) described this situation to us and sent us pictures, it was clear to us that we as an association had to help locally. This year’s project “Building a classroom” had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic and we want to support and help the many children and families in South Africa in these difficult times. We have already started distributing food and hygiene products to those in need and want to extend this help. Every euro helps a local person!
